Yes, not all Amish do but most of them do! Are you surprised? I was. Well they do not go out for a fancy dinner and movie, but they do give each other special Valentine’s Day treats like cookies, cakes, & such. Their children exchange valentine cards and sweets in school; however, they do not mention words such as “You’re Mine”, “I Love You” “Be Mine”. These word most of the parents look at as condoning intimate relationships with their young children. So what about the single Amish people? They also have many winter community activities, such as sled-riding and parties/events. On the Second Day of Christmas, December 26, my wife and I went to pick up some orders from our Amish friends; we were unable to find any of our vendors in one community. We haphazardly found one of the gatherings that the young people were having. The young people were from 16 up to 30 years old. While we were there, we saw them hand-in-hand, male to male and female to female, singing around a large fire. The fire was only for warmth. Some of the young people were picking up from the games that had been played earlier and cleaning up the food area. They looked to be having a good time. We were told by one of our vendors that the young folk in their family were late getting home because they had been expected home before dark as they had no lanterns on the buggies. #AllAboutAmish by #MissouriAmish If you have noticed that handmade rugs have threads that go the entire length of the rug, these are called the warp which is used to keep the rug tight. The horizontal threads are called the weft. With these types of rugs is the material that you see that is strand through the wrap. The operator uses a shuttle device to pull weft, the material, through the warp threads. When the weft thread reaches the other side of the warp threads, you have just completed a line of the woven cloth on the rug. With a loom the weaving process increases the convenience and holding the threads in place. The operator does not have to keep pressure on the material to hold it in place. With every back and forth of the beam tightens the material. Since the wrap threads are secured to the wood frame, the worker can control the tightness and the design of the rug. The completed part of the rug is wrapped around the Wrap Roller. If you ever want to see some amazing work, watch an Amish woman operate a loom. For those who are wondering, I asked the Amish women we buy our rugs from and they said they have only seen a few Amish men operate one of these machines. Well they saw me attempt it & it was not pretty. First, look at the picture with this blog. Now, take another look at that picture. Ok, one more look! Well let’s just say it’s not as easy as driving a car according to a lady that I talked too. I will begin by saying I have watched my Amish friends operating a loom for quite a while & they make it look so easy. Not only are they operating it, they must also be aware of the material that they are using. First, they either purchase the material or cut the material themselves. My Amish friends normally purchase the material for the Shaggy Rugs. They cut and tie the material for their Flat and Denim Rugs. Please note they roll the material into a ball which the person controls along with which colors will be used into the rug. This takes years of practice to get the right amount of color throughout the entire rug. Thus, each rug is very unique & very hard to duplicate. The Amish take a lot of pride in making these products so please refrain from calling Flat Rugs = Rag Rugs. The Amish really do not like it. Our next Part 3, I will try to describe how the machine works. Wish me luck. https://www.missouriamish.com/store/c1/Featured_Products.html #AllAboutAmish by #MissouriAmish We thank Kelly D. for emailing us this question. Let’s imagine that you are living in the 1800’s. Your family has just moved to Missouri from the eastern part of the United States. What are some of the things that your family would bring? Livestock, food, clothing, and many other things because back in the day you would create many of the things that your family would need as there was no Internet, Box Store or 3D printer, so many people brought a loom to make clothing & rugs. What is a loom and how does it work? A loom is a weaving machine & when used properly knits threads together to make a single piece of material or cloth. Looms date back to ancient times & enabled the users to be able to make cloth quicker with more uniformity. There are many different types of looms.

However, it’s a difficult transition. Changes would have to be made such as learning the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch language of the Amish, changing to the simple way of dressing and living, and giving up most of the modern conveniences. Anyone can join the Amish faith but it is rarely done. The church has to be shown good faith in an individual and normally there is a meeting of the elders to deicide. The community has to all be on board for it to work.
PS: Three words "No Air Conditioning" #AllAboutAmish by #MissouriAmsih Monday would have been my Mom’s 79th Birthday. My Brother, Edward & his wife, Dawn were able to come down on Saturday for a visit and lunch. It was great because all my children were able to make it. Nothing beats a great family get together. It felt as if our Mom/Grandma was there enjoying herself. We all miss her so much. I started to think how important birthdays, engagements, anniversaries, baby showers, and graduations are to families. So, we want to do something for you. Let us know about your important dates and you will get a surprise. Thank you for letting us being a part of your life. God Bless you and your family. Kyle & Laura |
