How do the Amish make Rugs: by machine or hand?   Part 2

Let’s get to the nuts and bolts of how a loom works. First, look at the picture with this blog. Now, take another look at that picture. Ok, one more look! Well let’s just say it’s not as easy as driving a car according to a lady that I talked too.

I will begin by saying I have watched my Amish friends operating a loom for quite a while & they make it look so easy. Not only are they operating it, they must also be aware of the material that they are using. First, they either purchase the material or cut the material themselves. My Amish friends normally purchase the material for the Shaggy Rugs. They cut and tie the material for their Flat and Denim Rugs. Please note they roll the material into a ball which the person controls along with which colors will be used into the rug. This takes years of practice to get the right amount of color throughout the entire rug. Thus, each rug is very unique & very hard to duplicate.

The Amish take a lot of pride in making these products so please refrain from calling Flat Rugs = Rag Rugs. The Amish really do not like it.

Our next Part 3, I will try to describe how the machine works. Wish me luck.
